I ran Juicy seven brakes when they first hit the market. I hated the turkey warble and howling when they got wet or hot. So for the last few years I have happily been running shimano brakes. Well, I needed something cheap and shimano setups always end up running a bit more by the time you piece them together. So I jumped on ebay and snagged a complete of these Juicy 5 brakes for under $150. I don't mess with anything under 180mm for rotors. I got mine with 185mm.I have been very pleased with these brakes. Out of the box they fit my XL frame and required no bleeding. The G2 rotors were another story. Both required some straightening.Performance? Better than my original Juicy 7 brakes. Only make noise when wet, but that goes away as soon as they warm up as you get on them. Power and modulation are comparable to my shimano setups. Anyone on a budget will be hard pressed to get a better brakeset for less.

I am gonna have to agree with you on the bang for the buck. I love brakes that have superior modulation because they allow you to control turns and technical riding with ease. Typical "on/off" feeling brakes do not do this as well. On the top end...Hope or Formula is hard to beat. If you are a budget minded rider...take a look at the Avid Juicy's. Mounting the calipers and lining them up with the rotor is a very easy task. I've had the 7s for years and have done nothing but change the pads. This is very useful when you're swapping the brakes onto a different bike.
The Juicy design is very low-maintenance.

Don’t forget Avid’s Capliper Positioning System. Mounting the calipers and lining them up with the rotor is a very easy task. I’ve had the 7s for years and have done nothing but change the <a

I replaced the original pads with organic pads and they have been whisper quiet ever since. I tried the Metal Sintered pads first (before the organic ones) and they were a little quieter, but after they got hot on a downhill I couldn't get stopped. Not stopping.... bad...Anyway, for anyone considering the Avid system, go organic for a quiet ride and when working with the DOT fluid wear gloves!! That is some nasty stuff that you don't want on your skin. My husband likes the Shimano hydraulic brakes, they are quiet from day 1 and they take mineral oil.For what it is worth!Angelas last blog post..26 West Mountain Bike Park

I have the Juicy Fives on my Santa Cruz and yes, the Turkey Gobble is an understatement.
