Cane Creek AER Headset – Lighter Than Air

April 28, 2009 7:36 am

Cane Creek AER HeadsetDuring my trip to Cane Creek Cycling Components a couple of weeks ago, I got to see their new ultra-light headset in production…the AER. Unfortunately, at that time, the AER headset had not been released yet, so I had to keep my mouth shut. The Cane Creek AER has officially been released at the Sea Otter Classic, so I can show off some pictures of the lightest headset in the world.

Cane Creek has this baby weighing in at 46g for the 1-1/8 threadless, 33g for the integrated,  and 50g for the internal headset. That is wicked light in the headset world and it is accomplished by some beautiful machining and the use of a Norglide composite upper bushing that weighs just 1.5g in place of a conventional cartridge bearing. This bushing is seeing a full season of racing in the test rigs and is easily serviceable and replaceable. For the bottom bearing, you will find a traditional stainless cartridge bearing.

This headset will not be for everyone and will really be confined to the race circuit and weight weenies with too much cash. It is cool to see the advancements in technology as the cycling industry continues to push the limits of what we consider normal. For those that don’t already know…Cane Creek Cycling Components is the originator of the threadless headset, and…to this day…still owns the patent rights.

Here are some pictures of the Cane Creek AER headset as well as my shots from the Cane Creek facilities. Now…all of you weight weenies…dry the drool off your keyboards. I can tell you that it feels as smooth in the bike as it looks.

  • You say “This headset will not be for everyone” Will it be up to the rigours of all mountain riding?

  • @ Cormac Tooze

I wouldn’t use it for that. Ultra light xc rigs and road bikes are where this headset is going to see its use.
