“Four Wheels Move Your Body…
…Two Wheels Move Your Soul”
When I first heard this quote out of a motorcyclist’s mouth, I could immediately relate. There is something about two-wheeled motion that truly moves something inside of you. Those that don’t participate in this open wheeled bliss…just don’t understand.
What Makes Two Wheels Move Your Soul?
- It is a true passion. If you have ever sat at the top of a long climb overlooking the mountains on a clear fall day with a slight breeze hitting your sweat soaked jersey…you know.
- There is something unmeasurable about cycling that brings you back over and over again. It doesn’t matter if you are a roadie, mountain biker, commuter or occasional rider, this passion still rings true instead each and every one of us. That first time you road a bike when you were a kid caught something deep inside of you that left you yearning for more. For the parents out there, it makes you want that first time your kid takes a ride without training wheels memorable. Cycling brings a feeling of accomplishment and happiness all in one fluid motion.
- I get some of my greatest ideas on the bike. It does not matter whether I am tackling the impossible at Windrock or finishing up a never ending climb in Pisgah, my mind is clear and my body is at one with the bike. It is a relationship with body and nature that extends past the ride and clears the mind.
- For many of us…cycling has become part of our identity and our #1 source of friends that we consider family.
- It brings you to a level you thought was never possible. There are days that I surprise myself by accomplishing rides that used to only be in my dreams. That proverbial bar continues to rise as I continue to push it harder with each ride. This same sense of accomplishment is carried over into the rest of my life and helps me get through situations that might have been more difficult to handle in the past.
As you can see, cycling transforms many things in my life and it provides me with a great deal of happiness and accomplishment. For me…that moves my soul.

Riding on trips is a focus for us, and the last three years we’ve seen Moab/Fruita, Crested Butte and Whistler. Riding in these exotic locales brings something extra to the sport, the fact you are on vacation and can plan around the rides is fantastic.
So true, big Rob, so true. I will add one more: Four wheels move your body; Two wheels move your soul and music moves your ass!

Great article, Robb. Just yesterday I had a pretty challenging and frustrating day at work. As I was leaving the office, bike on the rack, I called home and said “I had a horrible day at work, I’m going to the trail and I’m riding as hard as I can, for as long as I can to get all of this out of me before I come home.” By the time I put the bike back on the rack to go home, I had, not only accomplished a big improvement in my riding that day (improved my “lap time” almost 2 minutes), but I had worked out all my problems from work, had a plan to handle things, could not wait to be with my family and was in total peace with the world. Two wheels moving my mind AND soul.
@Ony: I have had a lot of those phone calls and rides. My fiancee (wife in two weeks!) knows me well enough to not question those kinds of calls. Our house can be a lot happier with those rides.
