Fox Racing – Ranger MTB Short In for Review
Apparel Reviews | 198 | May 14, 2009 at 7:57 amWhen I spoke to the guys over at Fox Racing a couple of weeks ago about doing an apparel review, they said they had the perfect short in mind. Sure enough, about a week later…a package showed up on my front doorstep with a pair of the Fox Racing Ranger MTB shorts ready for review.
A Little Bit More About Fox Racing
Fox Racing is known for providing laundry list of items for multiple action sports communities. You will see their logos grace products that are geared towards everything from wake boarding to mountain biking to motocross. They also do an incredible job of self branding and sell an enormous amount of causal wear from hats to t-shirts.
Around the mountain biking community, they are best known for their sister company Fox Racing Shox for providing some of the best suspension components in the industry. The Fox Racing clothing lineup for mountain bikers caters to the all mountain, freeride, downhill crowd with wild and baggier designs. If you are looking for added protection on the trail…Fox Racking has you covered there too with a complete lineup of pads to protect you from the ground or tree that you will eventually hit by getting in over your head. I have even reviewed their latest entry into the mountain biking realm with their Fox Flux helmet. When it comes to Fox Racing, they really try to take care of you from all angles of the sport.
The Fox Racing Ranger MTB Short
Enough about Fox Racing as a company…what did they send Mountain Biking by 198 to review? This Fox Racing Ranger MTB short is set at a mid-level price point for their lineup at $69.95. With a separate liner from the light outside shell, the Fox Racing Ranger is a great warm weather baggy.
- Shell: 100% Polyester 150D
- Lining: 95% Polyester/5% Spandex
- Our top selling baggy short with some great upgrades
- Zippered fly with fixed inner liner
- Inner liner features high performance RIDE chamois
- Cargo pockets on each leg – one zippered for added security
- Front hand pockets for a casual relaxed look
- Adjustable waist for perfect fir – no need for a belt
Initial Thoughts on the Fox Racing Ranger
Out of the box, I was not entirely sold on the pattern on these brown shorts. Luckily, there are two other color options (as seen below), so if you are not crazy about the look…you have other options. The outer shell is a very light polyester that should be durable enough for heavy trail use but light enough not to feel like a trash bag in the heat. The adjustments for your waist size are made easily and these shorts from Fox Racing are available in sizes 30-42 instead of the typical s/m/l/xl…so you should be able to get them to fit perfectly.
With several pockets and conventional hand pockets, the Ranger MTB shorts are versatile enough for my needs and could be used for commuting if needed. Mountain biking shorts are something I am pretty particular about, so I am going to continue to put this set from Fox Racing through some serious trail abuse over the coming weeks. Stay tuned to hear more on the Fox Racing Ranger MTB shorts as I get some saddle/trail time on them.

Nice initial report. Are these stretchy? I just got a pair of Seargent shorts and was surprised just how stretchy they are. Very cool material. Looks like the same chamois too. How is the sizing? My Seargents were a snug 38, this was a bit of a surprise to me as my 38in 07 epic shorts are huge (more like 40in on them).
@ Doug
They are not as stretchy as the Seargents. They are a snug 34 though…
Not crazy about the pattern. But check out out those sexy biker legs.
@ Paulo
You are seriously disturbed…you know that right?
Well, I picked up a set of Rangers. They are on their way back to the vendor though. For one the liner isn’t removable (was yours? looks like it from the pic). Next the waist was swimming. No prob, snug down the velcro. Well, let’s just say the velcro isn’t confidence inspiring. Okay, I can use them with a belt. Doh! No belt loops. Last item of note, not much room for junk in the trunk. Despite going a size larger in the waist than my sergeants these shorts appear to be even less roomy out back. A loose waist and small trunk are bound to lead to plumbers crack.
I wanted to like these shorts, but in the end they are cut just wrong for me.
Doug,
The liner is detachable in mine. Did they send you some old ones?
Might have been old stock. The site (greenfish) had them listed as 2009 model. I was a bit bummed that mine didn’t have detachable liner like the one pictured. I much prefer shorts with separate liners.
