I have a pelican case (1500) that I use for all my digital camera storage tasks. when needing the better camera gear I toss that in a day pack and ride to my hearts content.

Other packs like Dakine's Sequence Pack are great for good protection.

I usually ride with very minimal items with me, and the DSLR is definitely the last thing on my mind as a must bring item. Even if I brought along a small point and shoot, we would just forgot about it when we ride.

Also, how do you carry the DLSR such that it does not get damaged when accidents happen?

It may not be the paintbrush, but a mid-upper level camera really will help with the action shots. A decent DSLR makes it easy to take good pictures. A good point and shoot in the right hands can do a decent job, but it isn't going to capture as much depth and detail. I look forward to seeing the rest of this series. More and more people are bringing the camera along or shooting helmet cam footage.

Oh, and best tip I have for capturing good photos...
...clean the lens before shooting

Agreed on the DSLR (I shoot with a Nikon D80)...but...there are a lot of times when I am doing more technical riding where I do not want to carry the weight. My Canon point and shoot takes some great shots if you time it correctly.

Great informative write up. Yeah, I can relate to trying to get cyclists to cooperative to get that "shot". DSLR is a must...don't want to deal with shutter delay.
