Our Local Trails Are Underwater In Atlanta

I don’t know if you guys have seen it on the news yet, but our local trails (and most of the northern part of the state) are under water. The massive amount of sudden rain that we received over the weekend flooded every waterway we have in Atlanta and the surrounding areas to the point that they were overflowing the highways. Most of our local trail systems are located next to rivers and lakes as those are prime areas for recreational outdoor activities. The result is that most of our trails are now several feet underwater until everything calms down. The following pictures were taken at Blankets Creek in Woodstock, GA (via Sorba Woodstock’s Blog) where Lake Allatoona completely overflowed into the trail system and highway 575.

UPDATE: The Corp of Engineers have released their latest projections. They are now estimating the lake to be at 857 ft! Where it 857 feet? I’ll give you an idea. The “clearing” at the Dwelling intersection will be underwater by 3-4 feet. Water will be to the ladder bridge at the VMT entrance above the big rock. We may see water backed up all the way to the parking lot.

Hold on tight folks. We expect the trail to be closed for probably a month.

Needless to say…we are going to have a lot of work parties in the near future as we attempt to recreate the trails that are left in a mess from the floods.

It is really crazy to see how much water can create devastating results across the state to homes and other structures. Estimated damages at this time is in the 250 million dollar range with at least 9 deaths directly related to the flooding.

Looks like the road bike is going to get a lot of use as we prepare to rebuild our local trail systems.
