VholdR ContourHD POV – Helmet Camera – 1st Ride

June 25, 2009 7:22 am

I called my wife on the way to our regular Tuesday night ride with one simple request…”bring the box that is on the front doorstep to the ride…please.” In the box from the big brown truck was the new ContourHD helmet camera from VholdR and I was not going to wait to try it out. This point of view (POV) helmet camera from VholdR claims better video quality than the competition by providing 720 lines of HD resolution.

The small freeride section of our local trail system is a tough shooting site. You are in and out of trees in a dark are while the sun continues to set. This makes difficult lighting for small cameras that normally have a hard time adjusting to changing light conditions. The VholdR ContourHD helmet camera has outperformed the GoPro Hero and the V.I.O. POV.1.5 by far. If you don’t believe me…check out my first video shoot below. In the near future, I am going to run a test doing the same run…at the same time…with all three cameras to get a side by side comparison.

What did I learn from my grab the box and ride routine?

  • I need to aim the cam up just a little bit more to catch more of the action.
  • The goggle mount is in the perfect spot to capture the action that I see while I ride, but it is not stable through the rock gardens. Next time out, I am going to try out the surface mount to see if I can get rid of some of the circular twitching.

I had a little bit of fun with this video…enjoy.

Fast action bonus! If you pre-order the ContourHD helmet camera from Amazon…you get a $50.00 gift card. Click here to find out more.

  • sick – wonder how this compares to the tachyon XC cam?!

  • Fun video! I’ve been looking for good cameras lately too.

  • mmm… Contour HD looks well, and I’m sure it’s more “rideable” than others.
Resolution and colour are great, BUT I think that camera fall dawn resolving ligth-obscure contrast.

I wait with intetest your comparative…

Can you test some non-especific cam?
    Lumix TS1 blast!!!

    • The comparative will be interesting. I am just waiting on the other two to get back from a Tulsa, OK road race.

I will end up reviewing more tech based…non cycling specific…products on robbsutton.com.

  • I knew I was going to be getting one of these awesome little cams the second I read that they were being made. Not bad for a first ride. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more good stuff!

The circular twitching is interesting, I hadn’t considered that as a possibility and thought a helmet mount would be ideal. But maybe that’s because I’ve only done handlebar mounted video so far?

Either way, the new cam is bitchin!

    • I am going to use the vented helmet mount and surface mount (on the full face) to get rid of the twitching. The goggle mount just isn’t secure enough for the gardens.

  • nice video & nice single-track
can you please include a video shot when not mounted on the helmet. One of the things I’m thinking about is using it as a regular camera. It looks like it has very good shooting quality and I would like to see it the results while shooting riding friends from the side.

    • I have a couple of shots from the dirt jumps that I am working on where I held the cam in my hand and I also have a sequence that is going to be posted on robbsutton.com that is from my flight in a Cessna yesterday.

  • A lot better than I thought it would be. Thanks Robb!

  • Just needs to be a wider angle lens.

The GoPro is cheaper and not as hi res, but at least you can see the whole world.
The ContourHD is great 720p picture quality, you just seem to be looking at your feet all day long.

  • Simon....in Spain
